Monemvasia: A Peaceful Tourist Attraction
A vacation to an old medieval town is worth considering. Such places are not really huge tourist attractions. Therefore, you can have your peaceful time and also visit the various attractions in the locality. Since such spots are not very popular they are not always crowded and noisy. Getting an accommodation in such locations are also easy. Apart from all this, the locales are friendlier and hospitable. They are not business-oriented unlike the private rentals or luxury hotels. On the second floor, again there are two double rooms with one bathroom each. All the rooms have facilities such as TV, hot plate, coffee pot, A.C. and a refrigerator and the house is well-equipped. You can rent the whole house or single rooms separately.
The town of Monevasia is situated in Greece. It is situated on a small peninsula that is connected to the mainland with a small causeway that is 200m in length. The peninsula is located off the east coast of Peloponnese. Monemvasia literally can be split into two words- Moni meaning sole and Emvasia meaning entrance. That is, the old town of Monevasia has a single gate and hence the name. It is an old town and the Fort city has many historical places to visit. Monemvasia town is in fact a dream turned into reality.
In the 10th century, this town became an important maritime and trade centre. Since then, Monemvasia had faced frequent raids from time to time. The Normans unsuccessfully tried seizing in 1147. After a siege that lasted for three years, it was conquered successfully in 1249 by William Villehardouin. The town of Monemvasia came under the Pope's authority in 1460. Till 1550, the Venetians followed the town. In 1715, the Turks seized Monemvasia and it was liberated in 1823. Agia Sofia church of Greece is one of the most beautiful places of worship. The church overlooks the bleakest part of the rock.
Visitors can visit other spots of tourist attraction near Monemvasia. The tourists can make daily trips to the village and Gerakas port. The Gerakas port looks like a little frojd. Other major attractions around Monemvasia are Kiparissi village, Diros caves, Monastere of Evagelistrias, Ano Kastania caves, city of Mystras, Elafonisos Island etc.
